Poetry – Who Has Time For It?

Am I the only one that has trouble juggling family life, work, and a love for poetry? How do you do it?

I mean, family is important, obviously. You have people who care about you, and whom you care about a great deal. You have to make time for them. And, of course, you have to eat, which means you have to work. So where do you have time for poetry?

I’m being flip here. I’m talking about more than just writing. There’s more to poetry than merely putting it all down on paper. There’s revising, rewriting, and revising. There’s reading other people’s poetry – you know, so you can stay current with the styles. There’s market research. There’s attending poetry readings and workshops. There’s reading your favorite journals and websites – because you like them. Poetry itself can take up a lot of time. So how do you fit it in?

I find myself having more and more difficulty with this as I get older. Do you? How do make time for poetry amidst all your other important activities?
