Poet Laureate Charles Simic: October Is Initiation Month

Charles Simic, My Noiseless EntourageSince October is the first official month for Charles Simic in his post as the U.S. poet laureate, I think it is appropriate to give a short bio for those who may be interested.

Simic was born in Yugoslavia on May 9, 1938. At the age of 15 he moved, with his mother, to Paris, France. The next year they moved to New York and then on to Chicago. He received his education from the University of Chicago, though he received no degree, and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from New York University in 1966. In 1964 he married Helen Dubin, a fashion designer. He currently lives in Strafford, New Hampshire and has two children with Helen.

As a professional poet, Charles Simic has published 18 books. He has taught at the University of New Hampshire for 34 years. In 1990 he won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry and was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1996. A new book of poems, That Little Something, is expected to be published in February 2008.
