Recognition is good. It feels good to have someone else recognize you and honor you for the work you do. I recently received a small honor of that nature when a local newspaper, The York Dispatch, published an interview of me with a photo and a video of me reading my poem “20 Acres.”
“20 Acres” was previously published in another local newspaper in Hanover, Pa., the Hanover Evening Sun. It was published last year when I was the featured poet at a local bookstore that sponsors poetry readings. The poem can now be found at http://www.world-class-poetry.com.
I wrote “20 Acres” just after coming home from Iraq. The month was February 2006. I’d only been home for two months. My grandson Dylan, at the time only 3 years old, wanted to play in the snow. So I took him outside, which was a break for me from my writing, and I let him run around and play in the snow. He plopped himself down and made a body print of himself, which amused him to no end. Up until that moment I had been thinking about the book that I was writing. His excitement snapped me back to the moment and I got to enjoy it a little more. That evening I wrote the poem “20 Acres.”
You can read the interview with The York Dispatch by clicking the link below. There is another link to the video. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed sharing them. When you’re done, how about sharing a little bit about what inspires you to write.
